A daily prayer from the New England Conference

The clergy and laity of the New England Conference are sharing a daily prayer based on the Revised Common Lectionary for the week. You are welcome to use these in worship or in your own devotions.

Psalm 115:1 “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.”

O Holy God, We live in a land in which people wish to make a name for themselves. From the time we are young we collect trophies that recognize our achievements. We work hard in an attempt to climb the corporate ladder, as if our worth depended on it. Success, we are told is measured by how much we can accumulate – we must show our assets. So contrary to the message you Give us, O God, that we have worth simply because we are made in your likeness and your image. Today, we come before you in humility, reminded by the Psalmist that all that we are and all that we have is because of your love and faithfulness. With the Psalmist we whisper this very simple prayer as we swim like salmon against the current of the practices in our land. We whisper to you, O God:

“Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.”

Thank you Holy One, for your great faithfulness. Amen.
