1Peter 5:5
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
“God opposes the proud but
shows favor to the humble.”
After reading this verse, I was imagining what it should look like to be humble toward others. That would mean putting their needs first, attending to them, making sure they are comfortable and settled before taking care of oneself. I clearly do not always have that mindset. Sometimes I get frustrated when I need to wait for someone who is slower than me, and I know it would “speed things up” if I could just take care of myself first. Waiting, and tending to others first, is a true sign of Godly humility. It is hard for me to wait, but It is a sign of humility to wait and to put others first. Again, Lord, you speak to me this morning in a way that convicts me to change, and I am thankful. Amen

Jesus is our ultimate example of humility. Out of obedience to His Father, He humbled Himself all the way to the point of death on the cross. If Jesus practiced humility Himself, then why would I think I don’t need to. I couldn’t even have a relationship with God if it wasn’t for what Jesus did for me in the first place . God cannot support us in our pride. But in His mercy and compassion he reaches out to those who…
1Peter 5:5
As one who travels frequently for work, I have heard it said countless times about emergency oxygen masks, “Please put on your own mask before assisting others,” and it always sounds “wrong.” I realize there is medical sense to the instruction, but hearing it said out loud seems to contradict the spirit of frequent Scriptural admonitions against selfishness. Perhaps the better way to view this little slice of life is to see how quickly donning one’s own mask allows one to help a greater number of people versus going without oxygen while trying to help one and failing in the attempt. Humility must have as its end a noble purpose, and will look differently depending on the context.…
