A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, Sept. 3

Romans 15:1-6

We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The writer of today’s devotion focused on working together as a family in Christ.  He remarked on how working together on a ministry project made his church family stronger, and “brought people together.”  I think this is a valid and important lesson.  Church projects, especially those which have become traditions, come to mind.  When it is time to get ready for a rummage sale, it is all hands on deck at CUMC.  Different people have different jobs because they are good at and enjoy certain aspects of the project.  No one who wants to be involved ever gets left out.  The same goes for our Christmas Bazaar. And on the day of these events, there is so much fun, laughter and catching up that we are all closer at the end.  We support one another on those days, and enjoy each other’s company immensely.  Sure, we have our weaknesses and our faults, but we love each other despite our differences.

Holy Lord, help me to never fail to build up and love my brothers and sisters in Christ.  We are your people, working together as family.  Watch over our family, Lord. Amen

Romans. 15:5-6

Just like Becky mentioned, this Upper Room reading today brings to mind the many outreach activities in the church I attend. Currently, they are just starting their preparations for the Advent outreach event, “Walk Through Bethlehem”. The grounds of the church are transformed into the everyday life of the people of Bethlehem, it includes realistic props, period dress, live animals and culminates with the birth of Jesus. It is thoroughly planned and executed by many, many volunteers. The event is heavily attended from many in the surrounding community. It is wonderful to see and feel the excitement and joy that the volunteers exhibit while preparing for this event knowing that if just one individual is brought to Chri…

Romans 15:1-6

This passage opens with, “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.” I have seen this numerous times in just two days on the Camino. A woman (from Freyberg, Maine, no less) saw I was having trouble with cramps at the hostel yesterday and was freed kind advice. At supper everyone introduced themselves, states where they r from and why they were on the Camino. We became a temporary family of sorts. Today I experienced more of the same. I’m very low on the uphill portions. Several folks asked me if I was OK and one young student offered to carry my pack. I politely declined, knowing I…

Stronger together

(Focus: outreach ministries

Romans 15:5-6

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This description  of God above is the “God of endurance and encouragement speaks to us of God’s ability to be with us in our struggles, giving us the endurance we need to face life’s trials. Knowing that God understands and feels us, he provides comfort as we go through life’s ups and downs. We need  to be like minded . As we share our faith together,…
