A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, May 24

Hebrews 5:11-14

We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

The heading preceding these verses in my Bible is: Warning Against Falling Away. I am thinking about all of the years in my younger life that I spent resting assured in my Christian beliefs, but not doing much of anything about that. It really was complacency. Having children brought me back to a more active faith. I never left, but complacency may be even more frustrating for God to see. God has the grace to pull us back to the fold, no matter how much time has passed.

Heavenly Father, you are always there, gently drawing us back to you, always forgiving our lapses and our thoughtlessness . Thank you for welcoming me back to you. Amen

Hebrews 5:11-14

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Hebrews 5:11-14 “You no longer try to understand…” The point at which we become self-satisfied and unyieldingly set in our ways is where the Spirit can be shut out of our lives. The Christian life is one of life-long learning, spiritual growth and formation. The same scripture read years apart can have new and different meaning to us. There are entire libraries of other valuable works that open Scripture up to us in fresh ways. We should not let a single day go by without trying to understand our purpose and our creator.

Prayer - Gracious God, I pray that I maintain the discipline to spend time with you daily and to always attend to the lessons You would have me…
