A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, April 24

2 Peter 3:8-9

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Right now I wish I had chosen a different verse to start off our week about the character of God! When I looked to read some explanations of the passage, and read the passage in context, it seems the verses have to do with waiting for the second coming of Christ. We need to be patient; God’s timeline is not something we can predict or even understand. But the important piece to me is that God keeps his promises, and we should try not to have expectations about the “when.”

Holy Lord, thank you for your promises to your creation. Help me to be patient and to know that the future is yours, in your hands, and not for me to know. I can trust in you for everything. Amen

2 Peter 3:8-9

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Peter declared that the delayed timing of the Lord’s  return was an expression of his patience and desire for repentance among his people. The second coming of Christ is important to all believers. It means that Jesus Christ, who died on the cross and rose from the dead, will come back to earth gloriously…

2Peter 3:8-9. From the “Message”

Don’t overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day. God isn’t late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he does t want anyone lost. He’s giving everyone space and time to change.

In 2Peter 1:3 we are reminded that God has already given us everything we need to live a Godly life. And he has, but we are impatient! God seems slow sometimes. Yes, slow but this is so we have more time to develop a mature faith. We have work to do to try to b…

2 Peter 3:8-9

On the contrary, dearest Rebecca. This is a great verse to open our series as it highlights so many essential elements of the character of God. God is eternal, not encumbered by time. God is faithful, every promise will be kept, in this life or the next. God is long-suffering, watching our halting efforts to obey, and even our disobedience yet still forgives. God is loving, God’s deep desire is that none of his created beings be separated from this love.

Prayer - Almighty God, while we wait for Jesus to return to claim Your church we give thanks for the promises, patience and love You share with us, now and forever. Like George Strait sings about…
