A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, June 4

I Samuel 3:10

The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel! ”

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel did not know that God could be calling to him in that way. He had to be told by Eli that it was the Lord, and he should answer. God spoke in a clear voice to Samuel and told him His plan. We don’t often have the experience of God speaking so clearly to us; I am not sure it has ever happened to me. I do know that God gives me direction, but I am afraid I don’t always recognize His voice. Listening is an important part of prayer, and I need to make more of an effort.

Holy Lord, I know I don’t always stop long enough to listen for you. I sometimes wrongly expect you to communicate loudly and clearly to me. I am certain I have missed your voice, and I ask for forgiveness. I will try to do better. Amen

1 Samuel 3:1-0.

I know for a fact that God speaks to me through the natural world. I am blessed to live on a small lake with both East and West views. God made me an early rise so I can share these sunrises. I photograph whenever I can and wherever I can even when I travel. I once heard someone say "When you've seen one sunrise, you've seen them all." Oh goodness NO NO NO!

There are no twin sunrises. The birds on the lake are amazing, eagles, herons, osprey and in my backyard all the usual suspects. My video bird feeder even recorded a bear enjoying the seed. Needless to say, the bird feeder is put away un…

1 Samuel 3:10

And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears”

Sometimes God speaks to us when we least expect it or in ways we don't anticipate. We need to be open and available to hear His voice, even if it's not at a convenient time or in a way we're used to. Even before I became my husband’s caregiver, I to would sit in quiet meditation as I  listened  to the many sounds of God’s beautiful creation. Recognizing clearly, the voice of God does take much practice,…

1 Samuel 3:10

I was struck by the image used by the author of today’s reflection, citing the sounds of birds, raindrops, and soft breathing as gifts of peace and joy from God. She specifically wrote, “when I take time to listen.” That last phrase is what I need to apply to my life in Christ. I spend way so much time making my own noise that God’s voice evades me. If I seize opportunities to quiet things down and listen expectantly, this Scripture passage suggests I will enhance the likelihood of hearing the Spirit gracing me with these gifts of peace and joy.

Prayer - Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening. In times of quiet reflection, I will…
