A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, June 15

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Today when I read this familiar passage, I am struck with the words “every situation.” There is no situation in which we are unable to turn to God with our concerns. This access to peace through Christ is available 24:7. Even when I am agitated or upset over some minor happening, God is willing and available to help me to calm down. Turning to God for peace draws me closer to Him.

Father God, thank you for your gift of Jesus Christ and your Holy Spirit. I can turn to you whenever I need peace. I need never spend precious time agitated over unimportant things. Amen

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Once I/we are honest with ourselves about a source of worry, we can bring that concern to God. Paul wrote that we should talk to Him about everything through prayer. Everything includes obvious and hidden concerns. It includes fears that are easy to admit , those that are embarrassing to confess , and those that we may not understand like the cause of lost sleep or panic attacks. Whatever we feel, admit…

Philippians 4:6–7 Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God‘s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Because of some of our Tuesday evening discussions, the second sentence jumped out at me. I think Paul should have written, “thank God for all he has done and then tell him what you need.” Sometimes the thanking moves our minds to the good and lessens the worry. To find peace, we need to fix our minds on Jesus not our worries. True peace comes from knowing that God is in control –…

Philippians 4:6-7

Despite having read this passage countless times I saw something fresh today, and it was an echo of Kay Layne. Our prayers and petitions to God are to be presented with thanksgiving. These are the prayers and petitions of a believer firm and confident in the knowledge that God’s will is what is best for them. This in turn establishes the peace that only God can provide and cannot be understood until we are blessed by faith.

Prayer - God of peace, I thank you now, Lord for all You will teach me today. If the lessons are difficult, I ask that I remain aware of Your peace and let it consume any anxiety I experience. Amen

I have married into a family of anxious people, and I have witnessed the affect prayer and faithfulness can have on that condition. My wife is the only one of them who practices her faith daily, and as a result I have seen her anxiety come under control. I now know that faith in God can definitely bring peace.

Dear Lord, thank you for the peace that comes from belief in you. Amen.

I have found that prayer does relieve my worry. I have been a worrier all my life, but recently I have realized that I worry less. I attribute this to Jesus and the peace I have found in my faith in Him. My understanding of Christ’s role in our lives is so very important. I learn something new every day as I read Scripture. I am thankful for this knowledge and understanding of our Triune God.
