A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, September 22
Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
The image of being yoked with Jesus has become dear to me. A few years ago I heard an explanation of the “yoke” in a different way. I had always stumbled at this verse when I read Jesus’ words, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus never carried an “easy” burden. But I have come to understand that Jesus is inviting us to partner with him, to take his yoke with him. This lightens my load, and keeps me on the path with Jesus. Jesus is the way for me to salvation, eternal peace and forgiveness! I will take His yoke upon me, and continue to work on giving up control where I have no control.
Holy Lord, I will walk with you. Help me to remember that I am not in control- you are. Your way is the only way for me. Amen

I can’t help but think of those who have not yet found Jesus. Their burdens must be exceptionally heavy. I can’t imagine the weight of family worries, grief, disappointment, and mistakes without Jesus there to lighten the load. We are not meant to carry the heavy loads of our lives by ourselves. I looked up how homesteaders today train their oxen to the yolk… When teaching young oxen to become a working ox, farmers pair the young ox with an experienced ox. The experienced, stronger ox bears the majority of the weight and work load seeing that the younger ox is not overwhelmed. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
This is one of the more familiar scriptures in the bible. On my way to feed HUMU I pass by a farm where to very young oxen live. I have observed the owner while training these young oxen. My first thought was that the yoke seemed much to heavy for these young oxen. Pride, our original and persistent sin, is behind so many of our troubles in life. One manifestation of pride is the stubborn refusal of help offered by others. The extreme of this prideful thinking is the mistaken notion that taking Jesus’ yoke upon us Is oppressive and limiting. Eager to be “free,” such folks often fall under the much heavier burden of sin. This does not end well. Walking life yoked with Jesus is the more excellent path. Satan, the father of lies, never ceases to try and convice us we can be our own God. The yoke of Jesus will protect us from falling for the Enemy’s schemes and a burden that will eventually crush us.
