A Daily Devotion for Monday, September 21

Psalm 32:6-11

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you

while you may be found;

surely the rising of the mighty waters

will not reach them.

You are my hiding place;

you will protect me from trouble

and surround me with songs of deliverance.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Do not be like the horse or the mule,

which have no understanding

but must be controlled by bit and bridle

or they will not come to you.

Many are the woes of the wicked,

but the LORD’s unfailing love

surrounds the one who trusts in him.

Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous;

sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

The Psalm this morning caught my attention with verse 9: ‘Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.’ We have been given a precious, priceless gift, and yet there are many who are unwilling to walk to God. And then there is the old saying, “you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.” Maybe the origin of that saying is actually scriptural! I hope and pray that God’s presence and guidance in my life is never ignored. I know I have free will, but I do not ever want my free will to dictate a decision which is not in line with God’s will.

Holy Lord, I will follow you to the best of my ability. With you lighting my path, I will not go astray. Amen
