A Daily Devotion for Thursday, Sept. 17
1Corinthians 10:31-33
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God — even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
I liked the way the writer of today’s devotion connected our behavior to what others may see as the image of God. How we behave, the choices that we make all reflect our relationship with God. Do we honor Him in all that we say and do? Do we look like Jesus going about our daily work and interactions with others? This is both a tall order and an obvious truth. If we profess to follow Jesus, we need to do just that.
Holy Lord, guide me on the path you have laid out for me. May I be a true reflection of your love. I know you are by my side, and will not leave me. Amen

These two readings bring to mind something we explored last week; the distillation of the Divine Law to love of God and love of neighbor. By choosing to intentionally have our actions guided by the principle of giving glory to God, we demonstrate our own love for God and cannot help but exhibit God’s love to others. We become, as our Upper Room contributor described, direct agents of God. Sometimes this love is the “tough love” that is required when someone, especially a loved one, has gone so far astray that traditional ways of showing love become enabling and counterproductive. In all cases we are to love, tender and/or tough because God first loved us.
