A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, July 19

John 15:15

"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."

It was not intentional on my part that yesterday's and today's verses would be read on consecutive days. (If you could see how the verses are chosen and assigned an order, you would know that level of organization is just not part of the process!) These are verses taken from a long section of Jesus' words of support and direction for his disciples. For me, words quoted directly from Jesus are of a special caliber. Jesus explains to his disciples that he has shared everything with them. In spreading this knowledge to others, others are let in to this relationship. We can experience God as our friend, through Jesus. This is a friend we can trust, learn from, and be with forever.

Holy One, you are so big and so unfathomable to me, yet through Jesus you invite me to be your friend. I find it difficult to feel worthy of this friendship, yet I do cherish it. I am profoundly thankful. Amen

Experiencing God

July 19th, 2023

John 15:15

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

Lord, I can’t imagine life without You. I am eternally connected to You. I don’t want to ever be free from You. And it seems the more I bind myself to You, the more You bind Yourself to me and the more You draw me to You. I take more time to listen and to learn and to spend more time with You. I will never stop being Your servant, nor will…

 John, 15:15.

This, of course, reminds me of the hymn, “what a friend we have in Jesus.“ It is easy for me to think of him as a friend. We talk often. Sometimes about important things, but often it is just simple things I can share with him. One of the great line of this hymn is “ oh what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.“ If only everyone could think of him as their friend.

Prayer: GraciousGod, if Jesus calls us, friends, we should be the friend he expects. Amen
