A Daily Devotion for Friday, May 30

Psalm 30

Psalm 30

A psalm. A song. For the dedication of the temple. Of David.

I will exalt you, LORD,

for you lifted me out of the depths

and did not let my enemies gloat over me.

LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.

You, LORD, brought me up from the realm of the dead;

you spared me from going down to the pit.

Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people;

praise his holy name.

For his anger lasts only a moment,

but his favor lasts a lifetime;

weeping may stay for the night,

but rejoicing comes in the morning.

When I felt secure, I said,

“I will never be shaken.”

LORD, when you favored me,

you made my royal mountain stand firm;

but when you hid your face,

I was dismayed.

To you, LORD, I called;

to the Lord I cried for mercy:

“What is gained if I am silenced,

if I go down to the pit?

Will the dust praise you?

Will it proclaim your faithfulness?

Hear, LORD, and be merciful to me;

LORD, be my help. ”

You turned my wailing into dancing;

you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,

that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.

LORD my God, I will praise you forever.

This morning I included the entire Psalm, just because it has so many beautiful parts to it, and I love the whole thing!!!! We talked in Transformers about calling to God for help, and experiencing his response. This truth is stated in verse 2, which I underlined. What is amazing to me is that this experience has been described by believers for thousands of years. How many of the psalms contain verses describing this very thing? I am sure there are dozens and dozens of them. And in other books of the OT it is the same. This is an important truth which much of my faith hangs upon. People have experienced God, over and over, through the ages, and I can legitimately experience Him, as well. Thank you Lord, for your presence, your proximity and your steadfast love. Amen

Psalm 30:1-12.

Most of us call to our God in times of trouble, just as David did. I wonder, however, if like David, do we then praise God for the result or are os relieved we just move on, praising our "luck."

Prayer: Gracious God, May I always turn to you and may I always praise you for the help I received. AMEM

Psalm 30

At the risk of over-dramatization, I needed to see this psalm this morning. I have been ill with some viral thing since Tuesday and continue to feel under the weather. Becky is being attentive and I am not pushing things, but it has been a frustrating week. While not as dramatic as the health travails of our Upper Room author this morning, I will keep Psalm 30 in the forefront of my mind today.

Prayer - Lord, please release the hold of this virus on me and let me resume my goal of service in your name. Amen
