A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, December 11

Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6-7

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the greatness of his government and peace

there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne

and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it

with justice and righteousness

from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the LORD Almighty

will accomplish this.

These passages from Isaiah have been at the center of study and debate among Jewish believers, scholars, doubters, apologists, etc etc since before Jesus was even born. Christians of course joined in the study and debate after His birth. I can’t begin to understand these prophesies and all that they meant for God’s people. But I can accept that the prophecies may have been meant to say one thing to the people of their time, and another for God’s people who would follow. Jesus will make it clear for those who follow him. When in doubt, I look to Jesus to clarify for me. Jesus is the One mankind had been waiting for. Jesus will ultimately save me and bring me to eternal life with God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Lord God, I am so thankful. You have helped me to know what I need to come to you. Amen

Isaiah 7:14, 9:6-7

Several years ago in the Upper Room there was a piece about the Old Testament prophecies and where you could find the fulfillment in the New Testament. I wish I still had it, although if you saw my desk, you might find it hidden somewhere. Isaiah had much to say but these verses must have excited him. The Messiah was what the Isrealites were waiting and hoping for. He gave them some tangible information in these verses. Sadly, for Isaiah, he would not live to see his prophecy come to life.

Prayer: Gracious God, I love how these prophecies tie the Old and New Testament together. Although both are beautiful, they don't stand alone. AMEM

Isaiah… The great prophet… What a sense of awe I have when I read Isaiah’s prophetic words. The fact that this prophecy was 8 centuries before Christ was even born is so powerful! It makes me feel the sheer greatness of our God, the Father, given the fact that He had this perfect plan in place for us then and still today. Many, many centuries later the presence and love of Christ is filling the hearts of people all over the world.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your Son and for your perfect plan. Help me daily to make Christ the center of my life and I pray that the gift of Jesus reaches…

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 9:6-7

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.  The zeal of the lord almighty will accomplish this.

Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6-7

It is impossible for me to read these verses and not hear them sung in Handel’s Messiah. This timeless masterpiece brings Isaiah’s prophecy to a whole new level in its hearing. I pray it will always have an audience to hear and be spiritually awakened by its message, even in a world saddled by heaps of profane garbage masquerading as “music.” As I think about it this morning, I wonder what Isaiah thought and felt as the Holy Spirit dropped this stunning prophecy into his brain. Did he hesitate to write the words fearing he misinterpreted what came to him? Was he so struck by the message he could not wait to record it, dashing it…
