A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, August 7

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

In the last sentence: For the joy set before him he endured the cross… Jesus faced certain death, but endured this suffering with grace and humility, knowing he would soon be in paradise with the Father. What better comfort is there for me when I have a burden to bear? I know where I will ultimately be, and so I should take courage from that knowledge. My burdens here on earth are temporary and will ultimately end well. Jesus has promised me this.

Holy Lord, you have given me what I need to face and endure any burden. I hope that I can remember this gift when I need it most. Help me to live at peace, knowing my ultimate and eternal home is with you. Amen

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

How can I  rely on Jesus in situations where I  believe I have  to rely on myself.  Many times  I have felt far from my lord and savior. What makes me remain a Christian are the truths of JESUS.…

Hebrews 12:1-2

Each of us has a race marked out for us, but what this verse says to me is that our individual races are all relay races. The cloud of witnesses before us ran their leg and passed the baton to us. Even more, they cheer us on in a way that lifts our worldly burdens if we open ourselves to their voIces of encouragement. As we run our own race, we should give serious thought to handing our batons over to others to carry on their race. This season of life prompts thinking in legacy mode and a desire to be part of the great cloud of witnesses cheering for many who become followers of Jesus.
