Deuteronomy 31:8
The Lord himself goes before you; he will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
When I read a story like the one in today’s devotional, I almost feel like I have lived in a different world. I know that things like this happen, children are bullied and humiliated and even worse. But I never saw or experienced something like this. I think it would have broken my heart, even in 8th grade, to see someone made fun of in this way. The fact that the writer (when an 8th-grader) was able to turn to God for strength is inspiring. I find it a challenge even at my age to remember to turn to God first. But as Moses told the Israelites, “…he will never leave you or forsake you.” This reading today reminds me that God is with me through everything I will experience. But God is also in me to go to those who have been wronged, and offer comfort and love.
Holy Lord, sometimes we are wronged, and need to turn to you for comfort. But sometimes you will send me to comfort one who has been hurt, for I carry your light within me. Amen

The writer in today’s Upper Room pointed out how growing up can sometimes be very challenging. Being a kid who was “fluffier” than most, and being walleyed put me in a position to experience a fair amount of teasing. You can go two ways with this, you can push through with God by your side or you can fall into a deep black hole that can have serious consequences. I believe God put supporting parents who regularly lifted me up and sports in my life to help me push through and build my confidence. I thank Him and I praise Him for being with me and keeping me out of the black hole.

Deuteronomy 31:1-8
The young woman in today's story not only had confidence, she had God by her side! I am amazed that at her age, probably 13, she was so sure that God was beside her. This knowledge gave her the confidence to stand up for herself. I remember that at 13 I was still questioning the whole Bible story--was it a fairy tale or fact. As I matured and became a believer, I finally understood. Today I know God and speak with him daily.
Prayer: Gracious God, help others know how much you love them and will be with them always. AMEN

Deuteronomy 31:8 The default position of too many of us is resignation. If we took to heart the admonition that God will never leave nor forsake us we would more easily avoid fear and discouragement. It is unfortunately true that in more instances than not in today’s culture, a believer may seem to stand as the only human voice endorsing the precepts of God. The Scriptural reality is that God stands with us. “Be bold and courageous” are words to live by.
