Proverbs 16:9


In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.


Proverbs 19:21


Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.


When our faith is strong, we can see obstacles and struggles as ways to become closer to God. I will admit, I don't often look at complications in this way. But if I believe that God wants the best for me, and wants me to continue to grow closer to Him, I must also believe there is growth opportunity in everything.


Holy Lord, when my plans are changed unexpectedly, I hope to be able to take a step back and listen for your guidance. You have promised to hear my prayers. Amen

As Robert Burns said, “the best laid plans of mice and men go oft astray.” We can plan all we want, but we should also acknowledge that things might not always go as planned – and if they don’t, what is our response? Who do we get mad at? Do we yell at God because he has different plans for us? I know I’ve done that – and not so long ago. Our ability to accept change is difficult. Sometimes I’ve tried to see a change as a new adventure. But I have also questioned whether I am ready for that adventure.

Proverbs 16:9/Proverbs 19:21

I am a linear thinker and going with the flow when plans are disrupted is not my strong suite. One thing that has helped is being a frequent traveler. It is a little thing, but navigating the all too common delays, sometimes multiple, and surprise cancellations provide a way to embrace a change in plan as an opportunity to read, learn something new or simply find a place to be still and quiet for a time that I would not have ordinarily had. I need to find a way to get better at this in other situations where my plans are flipped. Remembering God establishes my steps for God’s purpose to prevail in me is a scriptural…
