Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Again we see music as a means of communication with each other as well as a way to glorify and praise God. I love the words "songs from the Spirit." It feels very much as if the Holy Spirit wakes me up to take notice when I hear certain music. I must become more aware of this, and speak to God each and every time this happens.
Holy Lord, although music can be simple, it can be very important in our communication with each other as well as with you. I am so thankful for music, thankful to you, Lord, for giving your creation this priceless gift. Amen

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Sacred or secular or something in between, music has deep communicative power well beyond ordinary speech. In Paul’s example he stressed teaching and admonishing, but music can convey an endless array of thoughts. Last night as I listened to Becky playing her piano I became overwhelmed with memories and found myself with tears on my silly face for three songs in a row: Smile, Somewhere Over the Rainbow and You’ll Never Walk Alone. I am always amazed and humbled by the power of music.

Because the New Testament didn’t exist yet, I am sure the stories of Jesus were told by person after person. Often, in the oral tradition, those stories were sung as a good way for remembering the story. We have so much music available to us and it also tells his story and his teachings. Let us always enjoy singing as John Wesley says in his directions for singing as found in our hymnal.
