A Daily Devotion for Friday, July 25

Hosea 10:12

Sow righteousness for yourselves,

reap the fruit of unfailing love,

and break up your unplowed ground;

for it is time to seek the Lord,

until he comes and showers his righteousness

on you.

As I read the devotion this morning, I was thinking of the expressions “dig deep” and “deep dive”. They each imply putting in extra effort to understand something more fully. When we put in the effort to grow closer to God, we take that “improved” or “better informed” relationship with us. We start each day from a more secure and confident position with God. I love this concept, and it is possible for each and every one of us. No special equipment required, just the love and longing for a closer relationship with God!

Holy Lord, I want to be closer to you. There are certainly ways for me to dig deeper into my relationship with you. Help me to know what I need to know- teach me, and lead me, I pray. Amen

Mark 4:3-8 / Hosea 10:13

In my mind the analogies of gardens and our faith are good ones for me to understand. I see it clearly when it is presented this way. I think of plants that have large tap roots that grow deeply into the soil in search of water, water them deeply and they grow strong, just as our faith is nourished it will grow strong.

Dear Lord, thank you for watering me deeply. Amen

A dry hot summer

(Focus: Farmers

Hosea 10:12

Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.

Like the writer  in the upper room this morning I can surely relate to what extreme heat does to our planted gardens. They need daily care, hoed, watered and cultivated  if this is not done, it will take extra work to make it usable again. If Left alone the plants will surely wither and die. Like the plants, and the  hard grounds,  people become unreceptive to the daily care needed in our lives. The presence of God in our world……

Mark 4:3-8 and Hosea 10:12

I liked today's author's question: "Are the roots of my faith deep or shallow?" While I never thought I had shallow roots of faith, I feel transformers has deepened them. I have always read the Upper Room Devotional Booklet each morning, but that was it; I just read it. Now, as part of transformers, no matter if it's the Upper Room or an assigned topic and verse, I do so much more than read. I have ventured into parts of the Bible unknown to me. I have given much thought and often struggled to then write my own thoughts and a prayer. I can almost feel the growth.

Prayer: Gracious God, We need not fea…

Hosea 10:12 The book of Hosea is rather bleak, comprised largely of the apostasy of the nation of Israel. The agricultural metaphor, a very common device in Scripture, speaks to renewal in the form of breaking up and cultivating the ground to receive seeds that will bear good fruit. This really speaks to the hearts of those who like to garden. Each spring begins a new chapter in preparing, planning, sewing, waiting, watering, feeding. Then the miracle occurs; colorful blooms, luscious vegetables and herbs with flavor that eclipses anything in the grocery shipped from far away. Our faith life goes through seasons like this. There are times when the ground is dry and seemingly without life. It takes concentrated effort to…
