A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, January 14

1Timothy 3:16

Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh,

was vindicated by the Spirit,

was seen by angels,

was preached among the nations,

was believed on in the world,

was taken up in glory.

Even though this passage from Paul says much, there is still so much it does not explain. I wish I could say I understood more after this week of readings, but I am not sure that would be exactly true. I suppose I understand more fully that there is much we are never meant to understand. Relationship with God requires faith from us, not intellectual understanding.

Holy Lord, you hold back much from us, at the same time give more than we could ever hope to deserve. Your grace is more than enough. I am thankful. Amen

These are the things laid before us. Although the how is a great mystery, it is a mystery that is not necessary for us to understand, we just need to believe.

Dear God, thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ, and for his sacrifice for us. Knowing or understanding all the mysteries is not necessary, for us the acceptance of your wonderful Grace is enough. Amen.

  1 Timothy 3:16

Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

I have to say that Becky surely presented scripture to us regarding the many mysteries of our Lord and Savior. I would say this scripture is definitely absolute and profound. Profound means penetrating, deep,  factual and containing universal truth. Absolute means complete; perfect. free from limitations, restrictions, or exceptions. Truth being that God, who is spirit, became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, taking on human nature while remaining fully divine. The incarnation of Jesus is the greatest…

1Timothy 3:16

This verse reads a bit like a creed of beliefs. We may never know the specifics, but we take it on faith God appeared in the flesh, as Jesus of Nazareth, was vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, was and is preached among the nations in the apostolic tradition, believed on in the world by many and was taken up in glory. While equally mysterious, we who believe also believe He will come again. Belief on a foundation of such mystery will never pass any human test of logic or reason, but that does not make it irrational or blind. Like I have said before, I don’t see because I believe. Rather I believe because I see.
