A Daily Devotion for Friday, June 19

John 4:7-15

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

This is only the beginning of the story, as we know. Today I am amused by the woman’s question, “Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?” I can imagine Jesus’ smile in response to that question. Jesus is truly greater than any of his ancestors, greater than any who will come after. His word is the Word of God, and Jesus has told us clearly how we are to live. It is only through living with Him that we will experience our thirst being quenched. I am so grateful I have been brought into the family of God through Christ.

Holy Lord, it is difficult to put into words just how grateful I am to know you are active in my life. You show me your love through my family and my friends, my joy in you, the peace you blanket over me when I need it most. Thank-you, Amen

John 4:7-15

Today I find myself relating to the plant in the Upper Room writer’s story. Just as the plant lacked luster from lack of the best water, so I find myself lacking spiritual luster. I have been distracted lately and have been neglecting my spiritual care. Thanks to God, I am availed an unending supply of Living Water. I find myself a bit thirsty right now, so I will head straight to the well of the Living Water where my thirst will always be quenched.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Living Water, water that will always satisfy my thirst. Please help me to keep distraction at bay and please help me to draw nearer to…

John 4:7-15

Those who have not experienced the grace that leads to faith remain constantly thirsty for meaning and purpose in their lives. They seek answers in many different wells. The problem is that whether it is a well of good deeds and altruism, a well of money and power or a well of self-centered hedonism and pleasure-seeking, all run dry and will leave one feeling even more thirsty, drained and ultimately empty. Living water is inexhaustible and leaves one more content and peaceful than anything the world has to offer. For the life of me, I just cannot figure out why this is such a tough sell in 2026. The new well seems to be technology and artificial intelligence.…
