Romans 2:8

But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

Sometimes I wonder what will come of those who have accepted Christ, but continue to do evil things, hoping that they will still be forgiven and taken up with God for their eternity. There are people who want to believe in God, and do believe in God, but continue to sin intentionally, choosing to cheat or mistreat others because they are in a position to do so. This is certainly a sinful side of ambition. Ambition needs to be paired up with a pure heart, so that others are not hurt, but are helped by our ambitions.

Holy Lord, help me to always have others’ well-being in mind when I make decisions. Ambition to know you, to be more like Christ, to do the right thing in every situation—this I will strive for. Amen

It’s not that the social justice concerns that dominate the 21st century mainline Protestant churches are unimportant, but Paul reminds us that justice starts with individual responsibility. Whether in this life or the life to come, there will be justice meted for unrepented sin for individual people, not just social structures. In1910, G.K. Chesterton wrote a book called, What’s Wrong With the World? The new Social Gospel was on the rise, but Chesterton observed, “You’re after the right things, but you’re ignoring a key part of the diagnosis.” His shocking (but Scriptural) answer as to what’s wrong with the…
