A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, April 9

Titus 2:7-8

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Today’s reading again emphasizes how important it is to set a good example for others. How we live our lives at home, while alone or as part of a family, reflects our faith and our belief system. This reminds me of something Richard said in one of our meetings. He was pointing out that we all have a purpose here on earth and for some it may be to live a quiet and faithful life. Relating this to today’s reading, this life is then seen by others, and sets an example. It may not appear to be a life filled with good works or miracles, but it is just how God intended for it to be, because it is filled with faith and love.

Holy Lord, I pray that my life is seen by others as morally upright and faithful to your word. I am not a mentor in the strict sense of the word, but would hope be a help in some way, for others who seek you. Amen

Luke 6:35-36

I always believed as a teacher, there was more to the job than the knowledge we were teaching. The example we set with how we dressed, how we spoke to our students, our advice, our encouragement, and our care for them as a person, not just another student. The last of this list was the most important. If we treat everyone with importance. We may just touch someone who doesn’t have that in their life. We just never know someone’s back story.

Prayer: Gracious God, May I always remember to care about those who may not experience that on a daily basis. Amen

Titus 2:7-8

This passage serves to remind us we are all teachers, all of the time, even if our vocation has not placed us in a classroom, lecture hall or pulpit. The passage begins with, “In everything,” which I interpret just as Becky has done, as the way we live our lives. Integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech in all our encounters will eliminate a lot of negativity. It is all but impossible to shame a truly nasty person, but a life of unquestioned integrity goes a long way in teaching others there is a better way.

Prayer - Merciful God, thank You for guiding me in dealing with an extremely unpleasant and combative person this last few days. I…
