A Daily Devotion for Thursday, November 16

John 12:26

"Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me."

So much of what Jesus taught is encapsulated in this verse. Being a servant of God involves action and intention. Yes, a servant follows the master, but an excellent servant learns to anticipate what is the right thing to do. A servant learns from their master- they don't just follow. Everything we do for Jesus we learned from Him. We learn and we serve.

Holy Lord, you sent Jesus to walk this earth, and I am so grateful. He is the ultimate teacher, and I will continue to learn from His example as long as I am able. May I grow ever closer to you. Amen

John 12:26

To many people, being a servant means menial work, being underpaid, and not appreciated. Servanthood is putting others needs first. It means to be more like Jesus. As a leader, he didn’t come to be served but to serve others. This is what he expects from us. If we do what we do in his name, we are taking his Good News and spreading it around.

Prayer: Gracious God, I pray that you see my work with others as honoring you. Amen

John 12:26 It is sometimes said we bloom where we are planted. Well, we may also be occasionally uprooted by God, and if we are truly servants, we can bloom again, even after a season of dryness. I pulled up the bulbs of the Dahlias from my summer garden to dry out and store in the basement. Next spring they will be replanted and hopefully yield even more blossoms than the previous year. Honor will eventually come to all who diligently serve and are willing to follow God, even to places that seem distant from our purpose.

Prayer - Loving God, no other master could be as gentle, patient and understanding of my weaknesses and shortcomings. Help me to always follow,…
