A Daily Devotion for Thursday, May 7

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Philippians 3:14

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

These verses lead me to thinking about the effort I put into following God’s will. Am I giving it the best I have got? We can’t all be world class performance artists with our musical instruments, or write award winning inspirational books or paint masterpieces which are sought after by millions. But when we are nudged by the Holy Spirit to follow Him in a particular direction, it is not our responsibility to decide whether or not we are “good enough” to follow that calling. God calls us, and we follow. And in the meantime, we pray, give thanks, and listen for God. We are allowed to enjoy our many hobbies and interests, especially when they lead us to those “thin spaces”.

Holy Lord, Thank you for creating me with a love for music and art and the written word. Even though I cannot create much on my own, I grow closer to you when I spend time on these things, as long as I keep you near me. I will listen for your voice. Amen

Becky, transforming

Hebrews 12:1-2. Philippians 3:14. A Persistant Faith

There used to be a road sign on a route I traveled occasionally. It said, "faith is a journey--not a destination ." I always loved it. When I think of a long journey, I know my car needs to be full of gas and I have packed all I may need. The same is true of my faith journey. Looking back, there have been many stops and starts. Thank goodness only a few stops. I think of this transformer group as a gas station. We read, we think, we write, and most importantly we share. We keep filling ourselves to give each of us strength to keep our journey going.

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fix our eyes on Jesus.”

Keeping it simple - Keep your eye on the prize! That prize being Grace, mercy, salvation, and everlasting life. I love the Upper Room writer’s words, “the beauty lies not on just the end result, but in the journey itself. And each step we take in faith moves us along much greater path”. I am taking steps regularly, with the help of so many, to move myself along, and there are many stepping stones along the way to help me, one of many being this group of Transformers.

Heavenly Father, please help me to run with perseverance. Please help…

Today’s reading: Hebrews 12:1-2

Philippians

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus0.

From childhood playground races to adults running in marathons for a good cause, all these races have one thing in common—the goal of reaching the finish line and winning the prize. Sometimes life can get hectic as we try to be everything for everyone who needs us. Our priorities may shift in the process as we strive to meet the demands of life. When and if this happens continue to move forward despite obstacles or setbacks. The call requires endurance and a…

Hebrews 12:1-2/Philippians 3:14

The Hebrews verses are the quintessential words on perseverance and the Philippians verse provides the reason why. I have long been deeply inspired by the concept of the cloud of witnesses rooting for me on the path of my race toward sanctification. When I look back on my parents, teachers, pastors, Sunday school teachers, Scout leaders, siblings in Christ and other good and caring friends over these many years, their memory is a vital part of finding the stamina to keep at it. Of all the paths I could have taken, it was the collective influence of this cloud of witnesses working through and with the Holy Spirit to put me on the narrow path that leads…
