A Daily Devotion for Thursday, June 5

Genesis 28:16

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”

Maybe our lives would be different if we began each day with a goal of noting God’s hand in everything around us. If I were to start each day with that profound wonder, things might get off to a more consistent “good start”. To me, that overwhelming sense of wonder and appreciation usually comes from the Holy Spirit, unbidden, as a gift. I don’t think it can be summoned at will. But thankfulness and protection of God’s creation and His many gifts comes from us, and giving thanks for all the beauty around us is something we are capable of doing at any time, on any day.

Holy Lord, help me to see your creation with wonder and appreciation, every day. I deserve none of the many blessings you have allowed me. May I be a good steward, and protect your creation. Amen

Genesis 28:16

Indeed, God is all around us. I look around and see how perfect His creation is, the wonders of a sprouting seed, the absolute perfection of an orchid flower, the power of the scent of basil to deter the dreaded hornworm, the excitement of plucking the first carrot of the season, the sweetness of a just picked strawberry…and all of this is only a few steps from my back door. Retirement certainly helped me to pay closer attention to His presence in my life. This is truly a glorious time in my life when I can take in all the blessings God has afforded me.

Heavenly Father, thank you for Your presence in my life and thank you…

I believe I said all that needs to be said in Yesterday's post. I am blessed to wake up each morning with a fabulous view and space I share with lots of different wildlife. God's glory is all around me.

Prayer: Gracious God, I really do know how wonderful all your world is. I'm happy to share it.. AMEN

SCOURGE OF THE GARDE

( Focus: for a more appreciative heart )

Genesis 28:16

Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”

This verse tells us  of how God can be present in all places at the same time,

in places and situations where we least expect him to be. After waking from his dream of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it, Jacob felt  alone and unaware of God’s presence in his daily struggles and journeys.  He was blessed even though he ran from his  fears. This verse reminds me to open my eyes to the reality…

Genesis 28:16

Buzzwords have a tendency to become overused, but a current such word is appropriate in reflecting on this verse and the author’s encounter with a snail in The Upper Room. That word is mindfulness. I walk through so much of so many of my days blindly bypassing signs of God’s presence and goodness. Working in the garden offers a chance to slow down and take some of these things in with all my senses. Quiet time in the morning gives that opportunity as well and that is why it is such an important part of the day. The message to me in this reading is to be more mindful throughout the day so that I do not come…
