I Samuel: 17:50
So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
Our faith in God is our most powerful weapon. I wish the writer in the Upper Room would have shared more about his conversations with God at that time. I believe that being fully accepting of any outcome is perhaps the most important part of faith in God. The verse from I Samuel is one of the greatest success stories of the Old Testament. But what if David had not won that battle? Would God be any less? God is awesome and powerful even when we lose our individual battle.
Holy Lord, help me to hear your voice and to follow your lead. You will not always lead me to success, but you will always lead me to you. I pray I will never lose sight of that truth. Amen

1 Samuel 17:40-50
As I revisited David and Goliath's story and reread today's Upper Room story, I am struck by two things. Yes, the faith of both young men in their situations, but also the preparation in their lives up until the present moment of their "battles." David had been using his sling shot to protect his flocks against predators. He had perfected perfect aim. Along with his faith that God would be with him, he knew he had the skill. Preparation. The young man in todays story also knew he had a love of the game and the skills to play it well. He also had faith that with God's help, he could demonstrate those skills successfully. Li…

AGAINST THE ODDS
Focus: young athletes
1 Samuel 17:50
So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.
David's faith in God proved to be the most important armor he had for his victory. David didn't just rush in. He studied the situation, chose his weapon. David had no military training, but defeats a heavily armed giant. This story teaches an important lesson of bravery, courage and faith. It was with immense faith that David faced Goliath and came out victorious. From the giant Goliath's attitude we also learn that arrogance leads to a fall and…
I Samuel 17:50
David and Goliath, one of the great stories from the Old Testament. I recently mentioned Dave and Goliath in an analogy during the women’s college softball regionals. Liberty University, a small college in Virginia beat Texas A&M, the number one seed in the tournament. For the first time in D1 college softball history the number one seed did not move on to the super regionals. The big and mighty SEC favorite fell hard. Just as when Goliath fell to David, we celebrate the underdog. We are all the underdog at some point in our lives but with God as our shield we can enter any conflict with confidence. I have been in situations that I have entered…
I Samuel: 17:50
The shocking defeat of Goliath by young David is an enduring symbol of the reversal of fortune that can ensue when God is in the mix. The story is so well-known its religious significance is sometimes lost. What is clear is that David called on the Lord not as a last resort when he was led out to face the giant, but throughout his life and even before the time he pleaded with King Saul to be put into that position. God is not a genie to be forgotten until we need help. God’s love and protection envelops us at all times. If we live that way, God’s power and peace will carry us through adversity, win…
