A Daily Devotion for Thursday, July 3

Nahum 1:7

The LORD is good,

a refuge in times of trouble.

He cares for those who trust in him,

I appreciated today’s devotion very much. Turning away or refusing to consider others’ pain is just another way to be judgmental: Nothing like that would ever happen to us, we would never allow such a situation to develop, we would have made better decisions, etc, etc. But life deals things out, and we can get a very bad hand sometimes. Or we can make mistakes. As Christians, we know firsthand the help that can be found in following God. And Jesus told us in no uncertain terms we are to love our neighbors. That means helping, not turning away. The writer’s thought for the day: “Today I will look for opportunities to show kindness and compassion.”

Holy Lord, life can be hard and at times very painful. Help me to recognize opportunities to make a difference and show your love, kindness and compassion to another. Amen

Nahum 1:7

Jesus shows us the way. He was so attuned to those in need. He reached out with His love, even when it was not asked for or expected. He actively sought out those moments and those people. I need to follow His ways more closely. Instead of just giving time, talent, or money in a situation that’s put right under my nose, I think it would be more Christlike to actively seek out opportunities where I could make a difference with kindness and compassion…and it might be something very simple like a hug for someone having a bad day, reaching for a canned good on a high shelf for someone who cannot reach up, or holding the door…

There are so many wonderful stories about Jesus compassion. What an example he has set for us. In Luke he brings a dead son back to life so his mother won't be alone. While we cannot perform acts such as this, we can pay attention to those around us and show kindness to those who need it. We don't need to perform miracles to help others. Like the the saying goes, "If you can be anything, be kind."

Prayer: Gracious God, help me be aware of those around me who need kindness today and every day. AMEN

Nahum 1:7

It is in our times of trouble when our trust is tested; those times when we are bereft with the sense that “God has left the building.” Jesus told His disciples, “Take heart, I have overcome the world.” I need to internalize that, figure out how to show kindness and compassion in the face of feeling betrayed, taken advantage of or lied to. The person doing those things is going through their own private hell, and I don’t need to pile on. Only kindness and compassion heals, but sometimes I need to dig uncomfortably deep to find these spiritual gifts.

Prayer - Merciful God, please equip me to show mercy, kindness and compassion as You would show these…
