A Daily Devotion for Thursday, January 26

Joshua 24:15

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

Joshua reminds the Israelites they have free will, and they have a choice to make. Loyalty is a choice. We show our loyalty to God by being consistently faithful, and not allowing another "god" to lead us off course. We show our loyalty by how we live. The world has a lot of pull for each one of us, in a million different ways. I must remember I always serve the Lord; I have promised my loyalty by accepting Christ as my Savior.

Holy One, you are the only God, and the only one I worship. Forgive me when I act in a way that shows disloyalty to you. I am yours. Amen

Joshua 24:15

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

To apply Joshua 24:15 to my live begins with making an intentional, concentrated choice to choose God over any other option. This choice will not happen by accident or coincidence. To truly choose the Lord, is a daily commitment where I will not waver. Those who follow the Lord must learn to recognize the practices, thoughts, and ways of the…

Everyone has choices! I know that I have faced the challenges of faithfulness and obedience to God or unfaithfulness and disobedience in my daily routine of life. I will always attempt to choose faithfulness and obedience to the best of my ability. Declaring my loyalty and obedience to God is my life’s mission.

Dearest Lord, you give me free will. I choose obedience and loyalty to…

Joshua 24:15

Previous to this verse, Joshua remind his people of all the Lord has done for them. They needed this reminder as their faith had weakened and other gods and idols were being worshiped. The same may be true for us at times in our lives. We are not always strong. Hopefully there is a Joshua in our life to remind us all the Lord has done and it is him we should be serving.

Prayer: gracious God, may we all have a Joshua in our lives in our times of weakness. Amen

Joshua 24:15 I still have (and wear) a t-shirt from a Promise Keepers event I attended with men from CUMC in 1998 or ‘99 that features the last phrase of this verse. It was, in fact the theme of the event. Any revival of Christianity in our culture will need to take place one heart and one family at a time. It will come after this trying season of people choosing to serve other gods and finding them utterly lacking in every facet compared to the God we worship and serve. Only this God inspires loyalty that is rewarded eternally.

Prayer - Sovereign God, I place no other gods before You, declaring my loyalty with the earnest prayer to maintain a…
