A Daily Devotion for Thursday, December 4

I Thessalonians 5:4-11

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

These verses remind us to be always ready, always faithful, and always alert to the reality that Christ could return at any moment. As I read this scripture, I am thinking about how easy it is to get tied up in knots over the problems of today. I so readily lose track of the bigger picture when I have convinced myself that a particular problem requires every ounce of energy that I can muster. God wants our eyes and our hearts on Him. Part of living a Godly life is stepping back, allowing God to do what he will do, and giving up to Him what we cannot control. If I can do this, I will be better prepared to face my Savior when that day comes.

Holy Lord, You see inside my heart, and know my struggles. This morning you have filled me with peace, and I am so very thankful. I am your loving servant, amen.

1 Thessalonians 5:4-11

I am so very grateful for those in my life who have encouraged and built me up. I have been very blessed to have had and still have individuals in my life who are there to encourage me in so many aspects of my life, especially those who encourage me in my spiritual journey. I pray I can be that person in someone else’s life.

Heavenly Father, thank You for placing people in my life who encourage me and please help me to be the encourager in others’ lives. Amen

Encourage one another

(Focus: someone who needs encouragement

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

The verse is a reminder for believers to be a source of support and encouragement for one another as they build each other up in faith, a practice we  should be continuing to do. In a world that often tears people down, God calls us by — using kindness, prayer, and positive words to support others.

Every word of encouragement can help the spiritual growth of the community of believers, and non believers as well., It calls for us to be a source of hope and spiritual growth for one another through words,…

I Thessalonians 5:4-11

The Upper Room contributor this morning focused on encouraging others. This is good advice as to what we should do, but even more important is the why. Scriptural encouragement is more than affirmation of a job well done. It is assurance that despite our weaknesses and failures, “God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” We are broken vessels yet still treasured by God. There can be no greater encouragement than this.

Prayer: God of all encouragement, thank You for the assurance of pardon brought about by the supreme sacrifice of Jesus for all who will yield to the Holy Spirit and believe. May I be a vehicle…
