A Daily Devotion for Friday, July 24

Matthew 6:25-34

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.“

As I read the devotion today, after the scripture verses from Matthew, I recognized I could have written these thoughts myself: “I often let anxiety about tomorrrow overshadow God’s provisions for today.” And, “Responsible planning has its place, but my worry wasn’t adding anything constructive to my situation. In fact, it was stealing my peace and causing me to doubt God’s faithfulness, which has always sustained me.” How did this man from Missouri get into my head? I, also, need to remember God’s faithfulness. He has not failed to be with me every single time I have called out to Him. I am thankful to Dave from Missouri for reminding me of Jesus’ provision for me.

Holy Lord, you never fail me. Sometimes it is painful, but life with you is so beautiful. Help me to be a better person. I am feeling your Holy Spirit nudging me, and I am listening. Amen

Becky, transforming

Lessons from a bird

(Focus: Those worried about finance’s

Today’s Reading: Matthew 6:25-34

Matthew 6:26

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Just  as Jesus says to stop worrying, he offers a powerful example of what it is like to live without anxiety about our daily needs. Notice how God continually feeds the birds of the air and how beautifully he keeps the flowers of the fields, and he keeps the grass alive and green.  Like the little bird in the upper room this morning, have you ever seen a bird have…

Matthew 6:25-34

The question in this passage that always grabs my attention is, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Stress and anxiety can certainly shave hours off, but will never add hours to our lives. I honestly think I am not a particularly fretful person. At the same time, I feel as if I am less fretful now than when I was young. Maturity? Resignation? Faith? Regardless of the reason, there is more peace found in worrying less and I am grateful for that.

Prayer - Jesus, You remind me that each day has enough trouble of its own. Please help me keep worry at bay, trust in the Holy Spirit to…
