2Timothy1:1-7
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,
To Timothy, my dear son:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you.
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
This scripture brought a question to mind- one I have never considered: Where would I be if my parents (and their parents before them) had not been believers? What if I had not been brought to church as a child to learn about God and the gift of salvation through His son, Jesus Christ? I have never thought about that. I tend to think God would have sought me out, maybe with a solid knock on the head. I have felt called by God since I was quite young. Church gave me the framework to continue to seek Him in a solid, healthy way. Another thing to be thankful for!
Holy Lord, I do not doubt that you would have gotten my attention somehow, but I am thankful that my family and those before them were already believers. I should never lose sight of the importance of that solid start in my life. Help me to stay on track. Amen

2 Timothy 1:1-7. A Faith That Lives On
Like some others in this group, I grew up going to church with lots of family in the pews. It was almost idealic. After church we would all gather at someone's house for coffee and donuts. We had our own Fellowship/family time. I tried to set this example for my own children, but it turned out differently. They went their own way, but it isn't a bad way. We don't all live next to each other, but each has their own way of worship. But that's OK because they do believe.

The Upper Room thought of the day for this reading from 2 Timothy is, “God can use my ordinary life for an eternal purpose.” Our legacy to those coming after us is that eternal purpose. My own children are now adults and it is my prayer that seeds planted will yield spiritual fruit.
Amazingly, God is still using my ordinary life to share the joy, peace and security of faith with children and adolescents through my ministry in Scouting. But, influencing the next generation for Christ does not have to be organized or formal. Simple, day-to-day interactions with a youngster, even once in a random moment, can leave an indelible impression behind. Never underestimate the power of the Holy…
