Psalm 121:1-8
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD watches over you—
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all harm —
he will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
God is watching over us, but it is difficult to hold on to this truth sometimes. Things happen. People get sick, get hurt, and people who we love sometimes die before us. Sometimes life does not go anywhere close to how we expected it to go. But it is true that God is always present. There is always growth when we look to God. Maybe part of the growth for us is remembering to go to God even when we are suffering- remembering to look to God and to look for the growth, the positives, that have accompanied the pain.
Holy Lord, help me to look to you in all circumstances, and help me to see you at work. Show me the way, Lord, so that I can grow closer and closer to you. Amen

A sentence in the Upper Room writing stuck out to me…” it wasn’t how we planned to spend the day…”. Isn’t that life? I can’t help but think about all the craziness in this world that we live in right now. Every day there are dark forces working diligently to pull us from our love of God and His Son, Jesus Christ. The distractions are tremendous, evil lurks, pulling and tugging. There are so many “bumps in the road”. It’s awful. But I can lift my eyes to the hills and guess what…the Lord is there, always and forever to take my hand and is the help I need. The reward for trust is protection.

I know more than ever now that I must shift my trust from my own strength to God. As I read today's Upper Room, I thought of our Friend, Kay. After the couple looked back after a very scary accident, they realized how thankful they should be for what did not happen. This is how Kay deals with life's difficulties. She always looks back and is thankful for what might have happened but did not. When she fell outside in her garden and sprained her ankle, she was so thankful she didn't break it and that she was not alone--her son was home and could help her. I have always marveled at Kay's positive attidude. Hers is a lesson I hope I have learned.

Do our readings return to this theme over and over because we forget the truth behind it? The old adage holds that it is better to be reminded than taught. Our human brains can accommodate a finite amount of new concepts. Being frequently reminded God will never leave, nor forsake us, gives us something we can carry throughout our lives in all situations. What I need to master is consistently perceiving God’s presence in all things and finding peace and contentment in it.
