John 13:14

‘Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.’

Jesus reminded the disciples to humble themselves, as he had humbled himself by washing their feet. There is nothing demeaning in helping another, even with a simple or dirty task. If Jesus was willing to wash the disciples’ feet, they certainly could not feel themselves above any task to help someone in need. Can we say we are more important than Jesus, or too ‘good’ to take on a task for another? Of course not!!

Holy Lord, Help me to see the small things I can do, and to never see myself as too good or too important to get involved in the needs of another, if there is a way I can be helpful. May I see these opportunities, and may I never turn away. Amen

John 13:14

The holiday and Advent season is a time when a lot of people start thinking about giving and helping. There are all kinds of opportunities around us, the Salvation Army buckets, food, pantries, angel trees, etc. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with helping and giving at this time, I believe it is also a time when I need to focus on helping and giving year round.. The notion of helping doesn’t have to be big noticeable gestures, it can be small things too, like a warm hug, holding the door for someone, or helping someone with a heavy load. Jesus set the example of humbling ourselves to help others in a way of no judgement, it i…

John 13:14. A Servant's Heart

I especially liked a line by today's author. "Jesus calls us to seek ways to serve others, to be willing and ready to respond to their needs." We are to "seek" ways to serve. We are not told to just answer when asked. There is so much need in today's world. So much of what needs to be done doesn't require special skills. - just a servant's heart to help and to learn from others.

Prayer: Gracious God, May I continue to seek opportunities to serve as your example has shown us. AMEN

A servant’s Heart

( focus. Local congregations John 13:14

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

Jesus came as a servant., and his lesson was to teach us to be a servant as well. Yet sometimes  we may find it difficult to serve people around us. Jesus provided a powerful example of serving others  by washing his disciples feet. Jesus was not speaking literally about foot washing.,he was actually saying , take care of one another, help one another. Do for one another. Meet each other’s needs. You and I are never going to be  blessed if we only Think about doing for…

John 13:14

Humility is in short supply in this me first culture. Whenever I remind myself I am nothing more than a sinner saved by grace, I can put serving others, no matter how menial the service may be, into proper perspective. Then again I have Becky who is happy to remind me I have a great deal for which to be humble.🙂

Prayer - Merciful God, the Commandments, the prophets and the Son all bring the same message; love God and love people. The latter may not always be lovable, but I know I have my unlovable days as well. May the Holy Spirit remind me to walk with humility and serve others as if I were serving You…
