A Daily Devotion for Monday, July 6

1Peter 5:6-9

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

It is unsettling to imagine Satan hanging around, looking for vulnerable people. I am one of those people with weaknesses galore. I won’t be tempted to rob a bank, or to take someone’s life, or to intentionally hurt someone. But I know already that Satan looks for times when my faith wavers, when I question God’s motives or His plan or his very existence. When I notice this happening, I need to remember Jesus’ admonitions from yesterday’s NT (Matthew 11:20-24) readings. Jesus was saying that those who had seen Him, witnessed His miracles, and still turned away were the most at risk for condemnation. I have also experienced God, in very real and unmistakable ways. I don’t always find Him when and how I would like, but I do have the unmistakable sense of His presence. I need to remember this, and know that God has called me to follow Him, no matter how I “feel.”

Holy Lord, I am thinking about Bev this morning, hoping that she is feeling blanketed in your love and peace. I also ask you to help me to stay on track, to never waver in my faith or my faithfulness to you. Amen

Becky, transforming

1 Peter 5:6-9

In this crazy world we live in, there are so many distractions that can pull us away from our faith, spiritual warfare all around us, the roaring lion Peter speaks of. Thankfully, regardless of where we are, where we are going and in whatever we are doing, we are never alone. God is with us. Just like the child who reaches up at the crosswalk to take his parent’s hand to assure his safety even after he has looked both ways. The assurance of God’s love and protection is all we need.

Dear God, please help me to relinquish my worries to You. Please be my shield against the roaring lion. Knowing You are always near provides…

1Peter 5:6-9

The Upper Room contributor’s story this morning is powerful. The foundation of faith he had on entering into his sudden new disability played a large role in his being able to make the strides forward he describes in his reflection. It puts into sober perspective my perceived trials and reminds me of how much I have been blessed.

Prayer - Lord, casting all anxiety on You is far better than trying to carry it alone. Please allow Your Holy Spirit to remind me I do not resist Satan or push back against life’s setbacks in isolation. May I always remember to lean on the angels you have sent into my life and ultimately on You as the Source…
