Proverbs 19:21

Many are the plans in a person’s heart,

But it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

We can plan all that we want to plan- as far as our human minds can go- but at the end of the plan, we must add: ‘God willing.’ God has a plan bigger than any we can understand, but he has let us in on part of it, through Jesus Christ. I have been reassured that my ultimate dwelling place will be with God, for all eternity. But how that will come to pass is really a mystery to me, as is my “tomorrow”, here on earth. I need to accept this hard reality and live with it. God softens that fear and anxiety with the presence of the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort me.

Holy Lord, you have a plan for your creation and we cannot know or understand it. Yet you provide us all the guidance we need, and the comfort of your presence. I am thankful and will try to continue to grow closer to you. Amen

Does God allow me to make my own plans without consulting him.  Yes to a small degree, it is called free will, like daily chores, making beds, fixing meals, self care, etc.  Will he even allow me to make my own plans when I don’t know his, and decide to do things my way. One thing I can be sure of if my faith and hope is strong I will be assured that regardless of what I plan, God will be the one directing each  step I take. I don’t believe it’s  a bad thing…

Proverbs 19:21

If we stopped and prayed before we made elaborate plans, maybe the Spirit would not let us be led astray. It is always amazing what prayer can do. “The best laid plans of mice and men go oft awry.” Robert Burns. We need to remember to involve God in our planning.

Prayer: Gracious God, I am not a good planner, but when I do, please lead me in the right direction. Amen

Proverbs 19:21

The modern day equivalent of this proverb is the saying, “Man plans, God laughs.” When our plans are Holy Spirit driven and aligned with God’s will, they stand a good chance of success. The only obstacle that s human fallibility. The opposite is assured failure despite our best efforts, and this can be very difficult to understand. The team that tried to construct the Tower of Babel believed they were doing a good thing, but their plans were upended by God. A crucial factor, it seems to me is the ancient sin of pride. When our priority is the Lord’s purpose, as best as we can discern it, and not our own self-aggrandizing plans, we are on the…
