A Daily Devotion for Monday, August 12

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus told his followers that by following Him, and ‘yoking’ themselves to Him, they could be sharing their burdens with him. How wonderful it would have been to actually walk with Jesus and be able to ask him questions! His answers would likely have been figurative and rather puzzling at times, just like those recorded in scripture. But we do have the scriptures, and so we can know Jesus’ teachings this way. For me today, the message is this: when I am worried or upset or afraid, I need to remember to turn to Jesus and allow Him to take on some of the burden with me.

Holy Lord, you have sent Jesus to share our burdens with us, and to help us to draw closer to you. May I never forget that important truth. Amen

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Every time I read these words I feel a peace because it expresses His care and concern for us as human beings. God knows that we live in a relentless world, filled with all kinds of pressures and hardships, causing  pain and exhaustion. He desires  the weary and burdened, to come to Him and give these burdens to him. He promises to comfort…

Matthew 11:28-30

As Jesus labored up the hill under the weight of His cross, Simon of Cyrene was compelled by a Roman soldier to help. My contrarian mind frequently turns to that scene when I think of our Lord saying, “my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” He bore the sin of the world and yet still calls all who are weary and burdened to Him. There is no greater love than this. We honor Jesus when we emulate His willingness to give of ourselves for the sake of others, even if in the tiniest of ways. Jesus sees the heart, and if it is one of a burden-bearer, Jesus will see the heart of a good and…

Matthew 11:28-30

Our choir has an anthem titled, “Come Learn from Me.” The words are directly from this verse. It has a beautiful tune and I love singing it. As the title suggests, and as we transformers know, our job is to learn from the verses we study. They are not just words—they are lessons. This is an important lesson. We don’t need to bear our burdens alone. He offers his help to share and lighten them for us.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for this reminder that I am never alone, no matter what is happening in my life. You are always beside me. Amen
