A Daily Devotion for Monday, April 1

Luke 8:34-35

When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

These verses about demon possession are difficult ones for me. What is it that happened to this man who was not "in his right mind"? I know that people who have mental illnesses are not possessed by demons. What did Jesus do for this man? The man was freed of the "demons" which inhabited his mind. These may have been actual demons, which we know little to nothing about from scripture, or he may have been freed from his mental illness, which was figuratively described as "demons." In any event, he was healed by Jesus, again showing the magnificent power of Jesus to heal any ailment. Challenging verses for me.

Holy Lord, there is so much I don't understand about you. But I know you are powerful beyond my understanding. Lead me, Lord. Amen

Luke 8:34-35. (but some before and some after)

The mind is the most mysterious part of our being. In this story, we have demons or mental illness. Demons we don’t really understand. Mental illness at least we can begin to understand. It really doesn’t matter, however. Jesus did what Jesus does—He performed a miracle for this man. My curiosity made me want to understand the before and after of this story. What struck me about the after was that although the man wanted to now follow Jesus, Jesus had a different plan, a better plan. Go home, he said. Tell them everything. He would be a better ambassador at home than with Jesus. They would see his mind re…

Luke 8:34-35

What a site to see the demon is gone! Then telling others what they saw, it’s like seeing the empty tomb and then seeing Jesus! What a site to see! Awesome, Amazing I can’t say all that I’m thinking describes what I see and what a site there isn’t enough space to describe the feelings that I have! Wow he has Risen! ! He has risen in deed !

Prayer Dear Risen Lord, thank you for the hope we receive in Easter, for the “foolish love” help me to always look to look at the blessings and hope we are given this Easter! Amen

Luke 8:34-35

This passage may say more about the people than the man who Jesus healed. They had to know this man, perhaps from his childhood. His actions were so disruptive he was exiled from the town and shackled in the tombs. Yet when they found him with Jesus and his mind fully restored, they acted in fear and self-concern over the loss of marketable pigs. Instead of a mind of joy and compassion for the healing of one of their own, a gentile, theirs was a mind of fear and greed. The lesson I get here is to keep my mind on my many blessings and not life’s setbacks and losses.

Prayer - Risen Jesus, as I look ahead…
