A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 20

1Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I am now realizing that verses having to do with love or family often do not differentiate between biological family and our Christian family of believers. These very familiar verses from 1Corinthians are a good measuring device when I look at any of my relationships. Does my love protect, trust, hope and persevere? Most of the time! Am I always patient? Am I slow to anger? Do I quickly forgive? These are tougher for me. (Ask Tom!) I guess this passage is familiar for a reason- it is very helpful teaching and a tool for evaluating any of our relationships we profess to be "loving" ones.

Holy Lord, help me to remember to be patient, to set aside anger, to quickly forgive. This is part of truly loving another. Amen

This is one of my favorites in fact I purchased art work from a Christian book store many years ago and it was on clearance I was appalled thinking how could such beautiful statement of God’s love be thrown on a clearance table? Needless to say it hangs on my wall and reminds me daily that Love is patient and kind and it never ends.

Dear Gracious and loving God, thank you for the many ways your remind us of your love and help me to be patient and forgiving and help me to help others to earn to forgive the way you teach us to.Amen

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

We live in a world where romance novels, the entertainment industry, and online match-making sites promote a false understanding of what love actually is. The so-called love popularity by television, movies, books, and the internet invites a single thought of “me myself and I” .It’s all about what one partner can do for the other or how on…

1 Corinthians 13:4–7

We often hear these verses at weddings, as a reminder to the bride and groom that this is what love is. These verses are love, 101! They give us the true definition of love. This is the love we receive from God and the love he wants us to give to others. I know I fall short sometimes, but I am always working on getting better – and not excusing my behavior. It is very clear that if we all behaved the way Paul describes love, the world would be a much better place.

Prayer: gracious God, help me to always remember these words, and carry them out in my words and actions toward others. Amen.

1Corinthians 13:4-7

Heard so often at wedding ceremonies we can forget Paul wrote these words to a church, not a couple. The qualities described perfectly capture the essence of familial love. If lived in our homes it will be that much easier to be lived in our church family. The one that stands out the most to me this morning is keeping no record of wrongs. Forgiveness is a powerful eraser and healer of relationships.

Prayer - Forgiving God, help each and every one of us You have adopted as family learn to freely forgive and cultivate more love in all of our dealings with one another. As this love grows and matures we will all better sense Your constant…
