A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 20

1Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I am now realizing that verses having to do with love or family often do not differentiate between biological family and our Christian family of believers. These very familiar verses from 1Corinthians are a good measuring device when I look at any of my relationships. Does my love protect, trust, hope and persevere? Most of the time! Am I always patient? Am I slow to anger? Do I quickly forgive? These are tougher for me. (Ask Tom!) I guess this passage is familiar for a reason- it is very helpful teaching and a tool for evaluating any of our relationships we profess to be "loving" ones.

Holy Lord, help me to remember to be patient, to set aside anger, to quickly forgive. This is part of truly loving another. Amen
