1Peter 5:8-9
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
"Resist him, standing firm in the faith...". This is the part of the verses that jumped out at me today. Our best defense against the forces of evil is our faith. We are not instructed to take up arms or to literally fight back. When we engage in an unholy conflict, we have already lost. It can be difficult to remember Jesus when I am angry or engaged in some kind of conflict. But this is my best weapon, my best shield.
Holy Lord, help me to be always aware of your presence in my heart, so I can turn away from conflict and temptation and turn back to you. Amen

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
How would we react if there was a lion prowling outside our homes. Now, how would we react if he was in our home. Needless to say I think we would be alert watchful and in control. 1Peter 5:8-9 Resisting evil requires diligence. It is everywhere. It can be quite subtle. It will devour all who do not resist. We are reminded by Peter as well that our own resistance can encourage and empower other believers facing evil to strengthen their resolve to resist. We are stronger together than the sum of our individual strength through the power of the Holy Spirit that indwells the family of God.
Prayer - God of power, keep me watchful and wary of all
