A Daily Devotion for Friday, May 8

2Corinthians 9:6-11

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;

their righteousness endures forever.”

Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

What I love about the devotion today is that the church was teaching its members how to give. I think there are two parts to giving, and each part can be challenging. First, one needs to come to terms with giving away something they value. Secondly, the personal interaction of giving something to someone else, especially if they are a stranger, can be very uncomfortable. This church took away the first challenge by giving its parishioners money to give away. They got to choose when and how to give it away- who knows what that could start? It is beautiful, and I think we should do it!!!!

Holy Lord, we know from your Word, that it is better to give than to receive, and you love it when we cheerfully share what we have. What a blessing this story from Texas has been for me today! If it is your will, may we try this in our church? Amen

Becky, transforming

2 Corinthians 9:6-11

As I read today's verse in the Message I was inspired. "You can delight in your giving, if you have taken plenty of time and thought to what you will give. That will protect you from sob stories and arm twisting." This is a paraphrse of the Message. When we give time and thought to our decision of what and how much we will give back to God, we know it is the best we can do. It is not just about money but our time and talents. When we know it is right, we do not need to feel any guilt. When we are comfortable that our gifts honor our God, he will be satisfied.

A REVERSE OFFERING

(Focus: to give generously

Today’s reading 2 Corinthians 9:6-11

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Yielding to GOD’s will can be hard and sometimes it really hurts but I find it will always bring peace. The scripture reminds us that the person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart — not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. When we find fear or pride gripping our hearts when it…

2Corinthians 9:6-11

Generosity has long been an identifiable characteristic of people of faith. Pagans and atheists can be generous too, but the reason we give is what sets us apart. Believers are carrying out a Scriptural imperative and honoring God in their giving. I suspect that when non-believers show generosity, it is the Holy Spirit’s prevenient grace acting through them in that the Spirit knows they have resources to share. My hope is that they would be moved enough by the fruit of their generosity to seek the Source of that goodness and find God.

Prayer - God of all, those who believe and those who do not, please guide our hearts in the direction of generosity as there as…
