A daily prayer from the New England Conference

Members of the New England Conference Extended Cabinet are sharing a daily prayer based on the Revised Common Lectionary for the week.

You are welcome to use these in worship or in your own devotions.

Today's Prayer

Prophets and Plumb Lines

O Holy One, help us to pay attention to your guidance for us. In our foolishness, we resist listening to you. We have tried to build without your teachings as our measure. And when, predictably, everything falls apart, we still have trouble recognizing that you are the only one who can help us to put things to rights.

A plumb line shows how crooked our structures have become. There is no denying the truth of a plumb line. But we deny it anyway. And we push away the wisdom of prophets like Amos, who make us uncomfortable.

Open our ears, Lord, that we may hear you. Help us to follow your guidance, so that our efforts result in strong foundations, sturdy structures, and a healthy relationship with you, with the prophets you send us, and with all our brothers and sisters. Amen.
