A Lenten Devotion for Monday, April 14

John 20:4-5

Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.

A few verses later, John sees the linens, and he understands that Jesus has risen. What does it take to convince a seeker they have found the truth they have been looking for?— Something that resonates with them. With John, the folded, ordinary linens in orderly stacks. Mary heard Jesus’ voice call her name. Thomas needed to see the wounds for himself. What do we need in order to be sure?

Holy Lord, you have shown me many things, more than enough for me to know you are with me. For that I am so very thankful. Amen

Pieces coming together… The truth of the resurrection is becoming clear, even though, in the human mind, it doesn’t seem possible. I wonder what was going through their minds, doubt, fear, cautious gladness. What a time! A time that would change mankind forever.

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Your Son and for His resurrection. I pray I never doubt. Amen

John and Mary had something to go on--folded linens, and a familiar voice. Thomas just needed something like that and he got it when the man he wasn't sure of showed him the nail holes in his hands and feet. Then h…

John 20:4-5

Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

But he did not go in. he had not fully understood Jesus’s statement  that He would rise from the dead on the third day . Upon seeing the empty tomb, John remembered and believed…
