A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, May 21

Matthew 9:37-38

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

My mind this morning is in a lot of different places, not so willing to focus on this passage. The verses are very familiar, but I had never noticed that Jesus includes the words, “Ask the Lord of the harvest”. He is asking the disciples to pray to God to help send even more to do this work. Only after he instructs them to pray does he send them out. We should all do what we can to spread the good news, but this includes prayer. We can’t do any of it alone.

Holy Lord, help me to see my role in spreading your good news. You will show me ways I wouldn’t otherwise see. Lead me, Lord. Amen

Matthew 9:37-38

It is a wonderful feeling when you have good news to share. It may be the birth of a child, a new job, adoption of a little puppy, we are enthusiastic about sharing. But how great is it to be able to share the good news of Jesus Christ! That’s the best “good news” of all! Although I am sometimes reluctant to verbally share the good news, I hope through my actions in deeds I show the good news to others.

Holy Father, please help me and guide me to be a better bearer of your good news. Please help me strip away my reluctance and be more bold with my messaging. In Christ name, amen.

ISAIAH 53:7-10. ...How beautiful on the mountain are the feet of the messenger who brings good news.....

Matthew 9:37-38. The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord and ask him to send more workers.

Most of us don't like the word Evangelism. Yet, that is what these verses are all about--spreading God's word. Nowhere does it say you have to be like the young woman in the story today. But we do need to pray for guidance from God about how we can be those beautiful feet bringing God's word to the people around us.

Prayer: Gracious God, I pray that you guide me each day to deliver your message in whatever way m…

God’s good news

( those who, have not heard the gospel )

Matthew 9:37-38 (NIV)

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Speaking for myself I would have to have reached a certain level of maturity and biblical knowledge in my own faith journey before I could even fathom(understand thoroughly) evangelism . I feel I would  need more  training and confidence. After all, I don’t want to reflect badly on the gospel. And I don’t want to  disillusion anybody. Do wenknow better than to send people who are not fully trained. And yet the urgency in our…

Matthew 9:37-38

While the Matthew verses were the primary focus, this morning’s reflection included a reading from Isaiah and the author cited the passage from John’s gospel about the Samaritan woman at the well. The theme of sharing God’s message is one that is weaved throughout all of Scripture, but each of these three passages frames the work in a different way. Isaiah stresses restoration of a lost city, Matthew emphasizes the role of prayer in bringing more into the kingdom and John reminds us meeting people where they are and setting them free to reach others like themselves is a pathway to effective evangelism. There are a lot of moving parts here and I saw them all in my…
