Proverbs 18:24

One who has unreliable friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

My family of origin spread out all over the map with my generation. I know my brothers love me, but I don’t generally ask them for help. But I do have a couple of very good friends, and know that if I needed something, they would provide it for me if they could. “A friend who sticks closer than a brother”- I don’t think this proverb was written with conscious reference to Jesus, but it certainly could have been! And it is no surprise that my closest friend is a faithful Christian. A good friend in Christ is truly a blessing.

Holy Lord, you have designed us and created us in a way that leads us to seek others as companions and friends. When we have solid strong friendships, we feel safe. I am thankful for my friends today. Amen

Proverbs 18:24

I have been very blessed in my life to have some very close friends. We’ve been in other’s lives since before elementary school. We lived in the same neighborhood in a very small town. Our families were not “upwardly mobile” and no one moved away. I’ve never had a friend who was not really a true friend. These friends will always be there for me and me for them.

BUT, I know I also have another friend. As the song says quite well, “What a friend we have in Jesus.” It is a song that also encourages prayer. It is the perfect way to think of Jesus—as a friend. He and I talk all the time.

Proverbs 18:24

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

I am the oldest of seven siblings, and I have to say I am not close to any  of them. I have been a close friend to these people, and many times gave all that I could, only to be betrayed until the next time they need something. To find a friend who is wise, constant, and candid with you is a rare thing. To find someone who understands the nature of true friendship and is willing to put in the work to be a true friend to you, is not something yo…

Proverbs 18:24

He or she “fell in with the wrong crowd.” I heard this frequently from parents who tragically lost their adolescent or young adult children to drugs, high risk behavior behind the wheel or interpersonal violence. Their beloved child had come to ruin. One of the lists of rotating prayers in my PrayerMate software is a list of “Ten Principles to Conquer Stubborn Habits.” Among them is one mirroring today’s verse. “Those who do not love the Lord will not help me serve Him.” Both Solomon’s admonition and its cousin in PrayerMate are reminders of the importance of discernment in choosing our friends. Any alleged thrills that come with toxic friendships are a pathetic and meager reward compared th…
