A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, March 23

2 Timothy 1:7

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

It helps me to remember this. Being anxious or worried is so automatic to me, there are times it almost feels more natural for me to worry than to be calm. God wants me to be calm and to shine His light. I can’t do that if I am preoccupied with some small concern, worrying and afraid of what will come next. God has helped me a lot in this area, but I need to allow Him to help me more.

Lord God, When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stout-hearted. (Psalm 138:3). Amen

2 Timothy 1:7

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

The world we live in is a scary place, there is so much reason to fear. This fear is not the fear of God but of man. Fear in many different ways and forms. Fear of pandemic, sickness, and diseases that have baffled the medical profession, fear of earthquake, terrorism, anxiety, worries, kidnapping just generally fear of everything.

This bible verse is an urge from Paul to Timothy as well as to every believer, especially in this world where fear has gripped the lives of many. However, nothing should cause a believer to fear. God has given us the power…

2 Timothy 1:7 This is a verse of encouragement. I needed this verse during the pandemic. My fears overcame everything. Sometimes, it seems like everything brought more fear! I kept it well hidden, but inside there was lots of fear. Only prayer and belief in God‘s love and protection helped a bit. I could encouraged others, but had trouble taking my own advice. I finally took my own advice and began to trust in God‘s protection. Prayer: gracious God, I know I am not in control, but I often believe I am. I know I need to trust you more. Amen

2 Timothy 1: 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

Courage to change. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can change. The gift of the Holy Spirit is given to us through Jesus Christ in order to have the grace to change for the better. This gift of grace gives us the power, love and self-discipline to show God’s love to all we meet. As I’ve said in the past, it doesn’t have to be preaching on the street corner, it can be just a smile, a hello to someone we don’t know, and this may radiate to them the love God has for them.

Dearest…

2 Timothy 1:7

There are various translations of this verse. Some say, “spirit of timidity,“ some say “fear,“ but the NRSV says “spirit of cowardice.“ The latter seems the be most on target as an opposite for courage. A coward is fearful and abandons the mission. A courageous person may still have fear, but overcomes that fear to achieve the objective. When the objective is pursuing the purposes and will of God, the source of that courage is the Holy Spirit.

Prayer - God of courage, remove from me, Lord, any propensity to cowardice when faced with carrying out the mission to which You have assigned this servant. Fill me with Your power, love and self-discipline. Amen
