A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, June 19

Luke 6:38

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

God is generous with His blessings. I do not think that Jesus is saying we will be repaid for every good deed in some exact way. But I do think that Jesus is reminding us that if we are not generous, or worse, if we skimp or cheat others, God sees this. We are blessed when we bless others. Even if it is not in an exact, measurable way, (and usually it is not measurable,) we are blessed. Blessing others brings us joy.

Lord above, help me to find ways to bless others. Help me to listen and be aware of your Holy Spirit and to see my opportunities. Help me today, I pray. Amen.

I chose the Message this morning because it actually uses our theme of blessing. Give and you shall receive. What you receive is God’s blessing—not things. Our world seems to focus on getting. Getting more and more. The more some people get, the more they seem to need. There is no satisfaction. There is no generosity. There are no blessings. How empty that lifestyle must be.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me stay focused on you and the blessings you offer. May I be a giver n…

Luke 6:38

Generosity involves our attitude toward others. We should  be patient with the weakness of others, quick to forgive and slow to become angry.  I try very hard to listen to others when they are hurting and try to provide comforting words or deeds. God gives to us and Jesus saids we are to give the same to other and it will be given to us in overflowing amounts.  I know I can never out give what God gives…

Luke 6:38

That this verse verse is today’s reading for reflection really emphasized the irony of stories I have read recently about charitable giving. One was sad. It focused on landfills in a developing country full of donated, but essentially unusable clothing. Tons of clothing “donated” to churches and charitable organizations in wealthy countries were little more than an exercise in taking out the trash. The second evoked irritation. On opening a shipment container in South Sudan from an American hospital, the recipients discovered dozens of boxes of ball bearings for use in artificial hip joints. In both instances there was an imagined good that was being done, despite the knowledge, admitted or not, what was being donated was useless.…
