A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, July 17

Matthew 6:14-15

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

I have to admit, for me forgiveness often goes hand-in-hand with forgetting, and does not involve much effort on my part. I am not saying that I am good at forgiving, only that I am better at forgetting and moving on. After I am hurt or feel angry about something said or done to me, I can fume about it for a while, but then the feelings fade and I am better able to see the situation clearly. It takes a huge effort for me to forgive someone while I am still hurting. I am not sure that I have ever done that. However it gets done, it needs to be done. Jesus tells us in no uncertain terms that we must forgive others. Would his message to us be different if somehow delivered after his death and resurrection?

Holy Lord, there is so much I do not understand. But I do understand I must forgive others. You have forgiven me. I am so very thankful. Amen

Matthew 6:14-15

I read these verses as a warning. Forgiveness is so important that if we don’t forgive, it is a sin and we then need to ask for forgiveness ourselves. To carry unforgiveness is such a burden. God does not that for us, therefore this warning.

Prayer: Gracious God, May I see forgiveness as a path to being more like you. Amen

Matthew 6:14-15

For if you forgive men when they sin against you  your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their sins neither will your Father will not forgive your sins

How important is it for believers in their spiritual growth to repent, confess to our  lord and savior our sins and know that we will be forgiven. I can’t begin to even understand his sovereignty. What is forgiveness? Forgiveness means different things to different people. It  involves an intentional decision to let go of resentment and anger. The circumstance that hurt or offended us might always be with us. But working on forgiveness can lessen that resentment and anger. (How…

Matthew 6:14-15

How many of us remember Jesus taught forgiveness in a contingency clause? If we want forgiveness, we must be willing to give it. Like all things in life, there are levels of difficulty in carrying this out, but there does not appear to be any circumstance in which Jesus said we should not forgive one who has sinned against us. Since Becky asked a question, I will end my post with one as well. Does God hear and honor our forgiveness of one who has died?

Prayer - Lord, forgiveness, given our natural inward focus is difficult. At the same time there is no ambiguity in what Jesus taught. Grant me the strength to carry out what You…
