1 Corinthians 9:24-25
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
When I read this, I know I am only competing against myself. I am not competing to be "more transformed" than anyone else! :o) Perhaps I am competing with evil. I am here on this earth to be the best person I can be, by being as in tune with God's will as I can be. So, in the big picture, there are enough crowns for all of us who seek God. But we each must race for our own.
Holy Lord, I am sorry for the times I have decided to walk instead of run, or for any shortcuts I may have taken. I want to follow you and to walk in your good and perfect will. Light my path, Lord. Amen

At the time these words were written the winner of the games earned a laurel wreath, a crown made of the branches and leaves of a shrub. Like the flowers we get from a florist, this crown will wither and die. It turns into dust. You won the games and got your laurel crown. You receive…

Everything we do requires training, purpose, and discipline, whether it be a triathlon or being a good Christian. Christians train with prayer, Bible study, and worship. Each of these goals takes a lot of self-discipline. We need to assess our strengths and weaknesses and work hard on each one. Paul reminds us of the prize—eternal peace and rest with God.
Prayer: Gracious God, in this race, I choose you and the prize you offer. Amen

It’s hard work to be an athlete. It’s waking up at 4 am every morning and going to bed early every night. It’s having a plan for what you eat and how you spend your time. It’s about making sure that all the small choices in life all point to the one…
1 Corinthians 9:24-25
Our culture tends to place so much more value on what we can see and touch than on the intangibles. If only we would put a fraction of the effort into seeking God as we do seeking material comfort, our crown of sanctification in this race of life becomes within reach. Our most formidable competitor in the race is ourself.
Prayer - Help me to focus, Lord, on the imperishable crown of sanctification and life eternal with all the heavenly host. I place my trust in You to meet my needs in this earthly realm and strive to avoid needless and potentially destructive competition with others for a crown that cannot last. The only race truly worth…
