A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, April 8

Colossians 3:12-17

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Ephesians 4:32

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Today’s devotion presented a nice object lesson to remind us what can happen when we pass on God’s Word and his love to others. How many households passed on cuttings of the pathos plant after theirs had taken hold? Yesterday at work, I was surprised to have two different people thank me on the phone for being a comfort to them. That was nice to hear, but even nicer that the remarks were totally unexpected and came as a complete surprise. This gives me hope that some of God’s teaching is taking hold in me, and changing me from the inside. (Transforming???)

Lord, your Holy Spirit guides me, and I am so very thankful. Help me to be humble and kind in every situation, knowing it is how you would have me live my life. Help me to shine your love on others, all the time, every chance that I have. Amen

Colossians 3:12-17 / Ephesians 4:32

Verse 12 is described in The Message as “dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you.” This is an interesting analogy, the visual of walking into a grand closet and picking out the perfect dress with wonderful accessories comes to mind. The “accessory” that caught my attention the most was “bearing with one another and forgiving one another…even as Christ forgave you so you also must do”. In all our relationships, it is vital to see each and everyone as an individual, our friends and our family members all come with a unique set of idiosyncrasies. I need to accept them for the person they are and hope they do the same for …

Colossians 3:12-17. Ephesians 4:32 Making the Rounds

There are so many wonderful directives in the Colossians verses. They are very similar to the fruit of the spirit. In The Message version, a phrase struck me "cultivate thankfulness." Although I know I am thankful, I feel I could be better at expressing it. I wait for success and then I'm thankful. I know my friend Kay would be thankful "before" not just after. I am learning, but it is a slow process. I would like to wake up every morning saying thanks for all that is ahead of me for the day.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me start my day thanking you for all that lies ahead for the day. AMEN

MAKING THE ROUNDS

(focus: those whose generosity inspires me

Today’s Readings

Colossians 3:12-17. Rules for holy living.

Ephesians 4:32

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Colossians 3:12-17, Paul, explains the rules for holy living by having compassion, forgiveness, love, peace, thankfulness, and keeping God’s word. It is highly similar to the Fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Both passages describe the behavior of a maturing believer, focusing on kindness, patience, and love. Colossians outlines these as virtues to "put on," while Galatians identifies them as evidence of the Holy Spirit. I personally believe the most important message in God's wor…

Colossians 3:12-17

Colossians 15a in the CEV used in the Upper Room reads, “The peace of Christ must control your hearts” The same verse in the NIV quoted by Becky is a bit softer. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” In either case, if we lived out these words as Christians, we would easily carry out every single one of the other admonitions in this passage. We would be like that pathos plant, passing God’s love forward, and inspiring others to join us in doing the same.

Prayer - Spirit of God, please let the peace of Christ rule in my heart. I ask to be clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, forbearance, forgiveness and…
