Jeremiah 23:32

“Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” declares the Lord. “They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,” declares the Lord.

The verses which lead up to this one say even more about false prophets using their dreams to mislead people. The part of verse 32 that jumps out at me: “I did not send or appoint them.” It would be very difficult for believers today to receive a message from God through someone else’s dream. The acceptance of a prophet in this day and age is hard to imagine. Perhaps this is why God does not tend to communicate to us in this way. Dreams can be convicting and convincing, but unless we have some good evidence that they come from God, we must be careful.

Holy Lord, help me to hear your voice and to see your messages to me. I am dim, as you know, and need your bright light to see things clearly. Amen

Jeremiah 23:32

Messages from Jeremiah about the prophets warn us against false prophets and o think they are everywhere. It is so complicated and confusing trying to sort it all out.

Heavenly Father, please guide me as I try to understand your messages. String me away from false providence, and help me to stay on track in your Name.

The prophets very often delivered messages from God that we’re difficult to hear and they were typically scorned or reviled by the people. Add to this the existence of false prophets and the world of Jeremiah gets pretty spicy. One of the devices utilized by these false prophets was the fraudulent use of dreams. Even today there is a healthy skepticism that emerges when someone claims God told them something in a dream and it is a call for other people to do something or respond in a certain way. Perhaps this is a way to assess a dream. How likely is…
